Ward and Smith recently announced the hiring of six law school students for the firm's 2024 Summer Associate Program.
While they gain firsthand experience working in the legal field, we're getting to know them better in their own words through our "Meet the Summer Associate" series.
Introducing David Heeren
Hometown: Rockaway, NJ
School: University of Florida School of Law – 3L/LLM
What do you like to do in your downtime when you're not studying?
I enjoy spending quality time with my wife, watching or playing sports, and watching movies and TV.
What is your favorite movie?
It’s hard to choose just one; some of my favorites are the original Star Wars Trilogy, Goodfellas, and Rocky..
What is your favorite book?
I don't really have one (the movie is always better).
What is your favorite food?
Practically any dessert, especially peppermint desserts.
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
The beach, particularly Long Beach Island. I grew up going to LBI (part of the Jersey Shore) and I have so many great memories there.
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
A beachfront house at any nice beach.
If you knew you could try anything and not fail, what dream would you pursue?
Professional golfer.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
That I have two tiny dogs, Tulip and Daisy, that collectively weigh 25 pounds at most.
Why do you want to be an attorney?
The law can be complicated. People need attorneys to ensure that they are doing everything correctly, as the results can be dire if they unknowingly make a mistake. I want to assist clients in areas where they lack expertise. .
What sparked your interest in law?
My sister Abby had lots of special needs; she could not function on her own at all. Before she passed away in 2017, my parents were concerned about what would happen if something were to happen to them. At one point, when I was in high school, they met with an attorney to discuss options, such as a special needs trust. Although, at this point, I did not understand what that really meant, it sparked an interest in being able to help people structure their lives in a way that addresses what was important to them.
What is the hardest part of law school?
Being graded on a curve rather than solely on the merits of your work.
What are you most excited to learn during your time here at Ward and Smith?
To get to know the people and experience the day-to-day life at the firm.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Working at Ward and Smith and raising a family.
What's the best advice someone has given you?
Being the most prepared person in the room is never a bad thing.
Describe yourself in three words.
Patient, efficient, and level-headed.
If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A dessert critic.
Western or Eastern barbecue? And why?
Western, my taste buds do not like the taste of vinegar-based Eastern.
If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would the slogan be?
Everything is going to be okay.
