Avery Locklear, a labor and employment attorney in Ward and Smith's Wilmington office, joined the University of North Carolina at Pembroke's Board of Visitors in November 2024.
She will serve a two-year term alongside five other new members of the board, which includes alumni, business leaders, and community members who help guide and support the university.
Locklear, a former standout athlete at UNCP, made history as the first women's basketball player to achieve the Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 with a 4.0 GPA. She was also recognized as the Outstanding Student of the Year in the History Department and was active in various campus organizations like Kappa Delta Sorority and the Maynor Honors College.
In her new role, Locklear will assist UNC Pembroke in connecting with alumni, businesses, and policymakers and offer guidance on important projects. Her appointment highlights her dedication to education, leadership, and service, which aligns with the university's mission to empower students and communities.
