Five law school students recently joined Ward and Smith as part of the firm's 2021 Summer Associate Program.
They come from various schools across the state, from different backgrounds, and have a variety of legal interests. We are getting to know these summer associates in their own words through our "Meet the Summer Associate" series.
Introducing Dakota Lipscombe:
Law School: UNC School of Law
Hometown:
I was born in Richmond, Virginia but moved to eastern North Carolina when I was in elementary school.
What do you like to do in your downtime when you're not studying?
I like to run and watch football and Formula 1 racing. I also dabble in making origami.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is 2012's "Lincoln." I also like Harrison Ford/Tommy Lee Jones' "Fugitive" and "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back."
What is your favorite book?
"The Far Side Gallery" by Gary Larson.
What is your favorite food?
A high-quality cheeseburger.
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Any place of historical significance (or the beach).
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
Probably the U.K. on the condition that I could import my food from Italy.
If you knew you could try anything and not fail, what dream would you pursue?
Though I've never fished on the ocean before, I'd like to travel the Atlantic as a successful sportfishing captain.
Would you like to share something about your family?
Both of my parents are accountants and graduates of Virginia Tech. They are both amazing people and even allowed me to attend the University of Virginia for undergrad.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I can name most songs on the radio (the 70s to present day) by their title, artist, and approximate year (though country music can be a weak spot for me).
Why do you want to be an attorney?
I very much want to be in a career where I can help other people. Being a lawyer seems to align perfectly with this goal as well as with my problem-solving abilities.
What sparked your interest in law?
It's always something I wanted to do since I was little. One of my favorite children's books was by Judge Judy.
What is the hardest part of law school?
Finding parking near UNC’s law school can be challenging – especially on game days.
What are you most excited to learn during your time here at Ward and Smith?
I really look forward to meeting the people at the law firm and hearing about what they enjoy about their work.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Enjoying my law career and upgrading my current vehicle to a gently used Chevy Tahoe.
Describe yourself in three words.
Persistent. Compassionate. Diligent.
Western or Eastern barbecue? And why?
Western barbecue. I admit vinegar is popular, and I like it, but I prefer sweet barbecue.
If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would the slogan be?
Work hard, stay positive, and be kind to others.
Ward and Smith's 2021 Summer Associate Program runs through June 25.
